EXPERIENCE Sometimes, a gal just needs chocolate. My lovely 12 year old daughter was invited to a friend's birthday party and was looking to buy the perfect gift. I asked her if anything special was going on in her friend's life that needed to be acknowledged or celebrated, and she replied that her friend was having her first period. ADVICE Poke holes in your negativity so you think positive! Debate with your self: For every argument you have (i.e. - I can't find time to exercise), consider a counter-argument (i.e. - I could do 10 minutes of jump-rope in the morning before my shower then eat breakfast at my desk). |

TILT (This I Learned Today) The LAUSD is emphasizing life skills education in a program called: “Character CountsTM.” Kindergarteners bring home affirmations, weekly! In all grade levels, these traits are taught and emphasized: Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Good Citizenship, Respectfulness, Fairness, Caring .... And, here is a wonderful four-step process to handle conflicts without hurting relationships. It is called S.T.O.P. by Betsy Sansby, PhD. Here is a brief outline: S- Stop! as soon as you notice discomfort with the direction of the conversation, take a break. T- Time-Out! physically separate to prevent or stop the hurt and resume a talk when both are calm. O- Own Your Part! take responsibility for your role in the problem rather than blaming or defending.
