EXPERIENCE

Okay, it happened.  The dreaded I've-been-talking-with-you-all-evening-and-now-I-call-you-the-wrong-name fumble.  Well, I sucked in my breath, and said "I'm sorry <correct name>, for calling you <wrong name>" and we resumed our chat.  Thankfully, I heeded the suggestion of Charles Purdy in Urban Etiquette to briefly acknowledge the error and move on.  It may seem easier to pretend nothing happened but in the long run ignoring the error is not good for how others perceive you.  In the lyrics from one of my fave songs "I get knocked down, but I get up again ..."
