EXPERIENCE Some times it seems everything is pressing – the phone rings, there's a knock at the door, my son is tugging at my leg, the dog needs to be walked, and I have a deadline for work. At times like these, it's easy to become stressed and feel irritation. And, this is the time to think of something for which I can give thanks... Remind myself of the blessings that enrich my life. Recognize how fortunate I am to have my child at my knee, to be loved unconditionally by my puppy, to create and be productive, to be needed. In this realization, this new perspective, I transform, and I smile as my "burdens" become joys. |

TILT (This I Learned Today) An excerpt from the writings of Dina Weinberg ... We have many misconceptions about what it takes to make a conversation impactful. Let’s dispel some of the myths… Myth #1: Be brief, be bold, and be gone Could be true, however, it depends upon the person you are speaking with. If they are high influencers and they value helping others, then being brief will not resonate as strongly. Enter the conversation with lightness and concern about them. Consider: Know your audience before you enter into a conversation. Ask yourself, “Who am I speaking with and what is the best approach?” Myth #2: There are casual conversations and formal conversations There is no such thing as a casual conversation. Every conversation you have with someone is meaningful. Each time you meet someone and exchange some level of dialogue someone is forming an opinion about you – good, bad or indifferent. Consider: Make all conversations count. Find ways to especially make the casual ones impactful. Myth #3: Intention is enough! In the midst of a conversation, your desire might be to motivate, however, after the conversation, the individual feels patronized. That was not your intention. However, that was the impression you left. Consider: Once again, know your listener, their communication behaviors and value styles. When you are wrapping up the conversation ask the other person what they are walking away with, and ask them what they received as a benefit from this conversation. Myth #4: The results were less than I expected We all contribute to the results we get. Consider: Before having a conversation about “less than” results, first ask yourself, “what did I do to contribute to this?" Come up with a list which will help you to phrase the real questions you need to ask. Myth #5: I just asked a question! How many times have you asked a question you already know the answers to? And, how many times do people leave a conversation feeling interrogated rather than participating in a dialogue? Consider: Before you ask the question, state your intent. For example, state “I’m looking to examine what happened in this situation, so I’m going to ask you questions not to set blame, but to simply get information.” This will put people at ease. |
